Efficiency Gains with Federal EHR
Clinicians at the VA Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics are reporting significant improvements in efficiency due to the implementation of the Federal Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. This advancement is allowing healthcare professionals to dedicate more time to the care of Veterans.
Several staff members have highlighted the various time-saving features of the Federal EHR that enable them to enhance their focus on patient care.
Streamlined Processes
Dr. David Harris, the Chief of Staff, noted that the availability of printed post-visit summaries, which include AI-generated transcriptions, has streamlined the documentation process for him and his fellow providers. He emphasized the advantages of easily accessible medication lists and improved communication with community providers, stating that these features have been particularly beneficial.
Melanie Olivas, the Clinical Operations Manager, pointed out the EHR’s ability to import vaccination records, which is crucial for monitoring vaccinations and preventive care. Nurse Practitioner Thomas Trubenach remarked on the system’s enhanced integration across various health programs, explaining that the ability to order tests, X-rays, and lab work seamlessly has made a positive impact on patient care.
Positive Outcomes for Patient Interaction
Dr. Matthew White, the deputy chief of staff, highlighted the overall benefits in terms of patient interaction. He mentioned that the facility has been able to benchmark its performance against external standards and has observed an increase in the time spent with patients, while simultaneously reducing the time dedicated to managing the EHR.
These insights reflect a growing trend in healthcare where technology is being leveraged to improve the quality of care for Veterans, as illustrated in the ongoing series “The Federal EHR: Real Stories | Real Impact.”
