UNCW to Conduct Alert System Test
The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) is scheduled to test its emergency notification system on November 5 at noon. This initiative, organized by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, the UNCW Police Department, and the Office of University Relations, is aimed at both familiarizing the campus community with emergency protocols and ensuring the system is functioning properly.
Details of the Test
The upcoming drill will feature a full-volume test of the UNCW Alert system, which includes the outdoor siren. It is important to note that this is merely a test, and no action is required from those on campus or in the surrounding community.
Emergency Communication Tools
The UNCW Alert system utilizes various communication methods to keep the campus informed during emergencies. These tools include:
- Warning Siren System
- Campus emails
- UNCWAlert text messages and phone calls
- Pop-up notifications on university-owned computers
- UNCW Alert Safety App: SafeZone by CriticalArc, which connects with the Emergency Notification System and offers students and staff direct access to campus resources, the ability to chat with police dispatch, and anonymous tip reporting.
- UNCW Mobile app, which provides quick access to essential campus information and emergency notifications for students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Importance of Official Messaging
In the event of an emergency, the university may employ any or all of these tools, depending on the situation. It is advised that the campus community relies solely on official university communications during emergencies.
Students, faculty, and staff are automatically enrolled to receive emergency texts, calls, and campus emails.
