Sleep Issues Impact Overall Well-Being
Inadequate sleep extends beyond mere fatigue, affecting mood, energy levels, concentration, and overall health. This was the case for Navy Veteran Denise Guzman, who experienced persistent illness, fatigue, and discomfort, prompting her healthcare provider to recommend the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) TeleSleep program.
Initially, Guzman was skeptical that her sleep could be the root of her issues. She recalled questioning her need for the program, thinking, “Why am I here? I don’t have problems. I don’t snore. I was like, ‘This is just weird.’”
Diagnosis Through Virtual Consultation
After a few sessions with a sleep specialist via the VA’s TeleSleep program, Guzman received a diagnosis of restless leg syndrome—a condition that often goes unnoticed but can severely impact sleep quality. Reflecting on her experience, Guzman described it as “very eye-opening,” noting that the tools provided by her specialist have been beneficial in managing her condition.
Guzman first connected with her VA sleep specialist nearly two years ago using the VA Video Connect platform, a secure videoconferencing tool. This virtual option was essential for Guzman, who had to juggle other health issues and a busy lifestyle, while also dealing with a provider located almost 500 miles away.
Structured and Personalized Care
“I say that with all my heart, to be able to have the opportunity to sit down with my [provider] virtually,” Guzman stated, highlighting the convenience of the service. She began bi-weekly meetings with her specialist, who took the time to understand Guzman’s sleep patterns. Following this, the specialist organized lab tests and equipment through the nearest VA facility, with some items shipped directly to Guzman’s home.
“It was very structured, very organized,” Guzman remarked. “It was very personable, engaging and enlightening.”
After her diagnosis, a tailored sleep management plan was developed. Guzman and her specialist examined her sleep habits and positions, ultimately identifying an appropriate mattress and pillow to enhance her comfort and alleviate pain.
“Before, I used to sleep in a recliner, and now I sleep on my bed,” she explained. “For me, [my sleep now is] much better than what it was two years ago.”
Enhancing Sleep Hygiene and Health
Throughout her two-year journey, Guzman gained valuable insights into sleep hygiene and the various elements influencing sleep quality, including neck alignment, pillow selection, and bedtime routines. She emphasized the importance of understanding how sleep relates to overall health and recovery.
“She was really one of the best doctors that I’ve ever worked with,” Guzman said of her specialist.
