Iconic Haunted Attraction Open in Snow Camp
The Original Hollywood Horror Show, a popular haunted attraction located in Snow Camp, North Carolina, is welcoming visitors to experience its chilling environment. The venue, often referred to by brothers Dean and Starr Jones as “the haunt,” offers a variety of terrifying scenes, including “Bone Yard Cemetery” and “Dead Man’s Cove.”
Decades of Experience in Horror and Film
Since its inception in 1989, the Jones brothers have utilized their expertise in makeup, special effects, and film production to create fear-inducing experiences for guests in North Carolina. Both Dean, a graduate of UNCG in 1984, and Starr, who graduated in 1987, have enjoyed long-standing careers in both independent and blockbuster cinema.
Having spent many years in Los Angeles, the brothers coordinated their work on The Original Hollywood Horror Show while maintaining their ties to the film industry. “For years we were both living in L.A., and we would coordinate doing The Original Hollywood Horror Show,” Starr noted.
Their impressive resumes include over 200 television episodes and about 100 film credits, collaborating with notable directors such as Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper, known for classics like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Poltergeist.” Dean has also received two Emmy Awards for his contributions to “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.”
A Cinematic Experience
The immersive nature of the haunt is akin to stepping onto a movie set rather than merely riding through a haunted attraction. The brothers emphasize their meticulous attention to detail. “Nothing we do here is left to chance. Everything from colors to the textures of things. We keep that atmosphere through the whole show,” Starr explained.
Guests can expect to encounter a variety of spine-chilling characters, including killer clowns and zombies. The ultimate goal for the actors is to create a “code white” moment, which occurs when a visitor runs out in fear.
The Psychology of Fear
According to the Jones brothers, the thrill of facing fears draws visitors to their haunt. “Visitors like the fact that they can face a fear and get through it,” Starr remarked. Dean added, “The secret to a great scare is the darkness. People are afraid of what they can’t see.” This principle is commonly employed in horror films to generate suspense and unease.
Their horror inspirations are rooted in classic cinema, particularly Hammer Productions and Universal Studios. Starr expresses his admiration for Frankenstein, noting the character’s tragic nature. “He’s a monster, but he’s also a very sad character. He was just trying to have a friend.” Dean cites his admiration for Lon Chaney, stating, “I identify with ‘The Phantom of the Opera.’”
Spotlight on the Jones Brothers
