Governor Stein Honors NC A&T’s Homecoming Milestone
Raleigh, NC — On October 31, 2026, Governor Josh Stein participated in a significant celebration at North Carolina A&T State University, marking the 100th anniversary of what is known as the “Greatest Homecoming on Earth.” The event, which coincided with the university’s homecoming football game, featured a special proclamation from the governor recognizing the impact of NC A&T on the state’s cultural, academic, and economic landscape.
Celebration of Legacy and Community
During the event, Governor Stein expressed his gratitude for the warm reception from the university community. He emphasized the importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in fostering opportunities and innovation, stating, “HBCUs like NC A&T are engines of opportunity, innovation, and economic mobility. Their success is our success.”
Chancellor James R. Martin II also addressed attendees, describing the centennial celebration as a remarkable occasion. He noted the extensive attendance of alumni and visitors to Greensboro and the surrounding Piedmont Triad area, stating that homecoming serves as a platform to showcase the university’s vital role as a leading HBCU in North Carolina. Martin highlighted the university’s status as the largest HBCU in the nation and its significance as a doctoral research land grant institution.
Economic Impact of Homecoming Festivities
This year’s homecoming festivities attracted an estimated 200,000 participants, contributing significantly to the local economy with an anticipated impact of up to $80 million. The annual celebration not only brings together generations of NC A&T alumni but also illustrates the university’s legacy and ongoing influence in the region.
Governor Stein remains committed to supporting North Carolina’s HBCUs. Earlier this year, he enacted a budget that allocates nearly $480 million to the state’s five public HBCUs, including North Carolina A&T, underscoring his administration’s dedication to their growth and success.
