Rover Distance Comparison on Moon and Mars
An infographic has been released that details the driving distances of various rovers operating on the Moon and Mars. Among the vehicles highlighted are NASA’s Perseverance and Curiosity rovers, both of which remain active on the Martian surface. As of October 11, 2026, Perseverance surpassed the previous distance record previously held by NASA’s Opportunity rover, which concluded its mission in 2018 after covering approximately 28.1 miles (45.16 kilometers).
NASA’s Role in Mars Exploration
The Perseverance rover, along with other Mars exploration missions, is managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which operates under the auspices of Caltech in Pasadena, California. This initiative is part of NASA’s broader Mars Exploration Program, overseen by the agency’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington.
Current Status of Mars Rovers
As the infographic indicates, while Perseverance and Curiosity continue their exploration of Mars, Opportunity has long ceased operations. The ongoing data and findings from these rovers continue to contribute significantly to our understanding of the Martian environment.
