Coastal Storm’s Impact on Cape Hatteras National Seashore
MANTEO, N.C. — Cape Hatteras National Seashore has reported substantial damage following a recent coastal storm, prompting Dare County to declare a State of Emergency for Hatteras Island. Consequently, access to Hatteras Island is restricted for non-residents.
Damage Assessment and Ongoing Evaluations
The Avon Fishing Pier has suffered considerable structural damage, with a notable 20-foot gap identified in its structure. Officials from the Seashore are currently in discussions with the pier’s lessee to assess the full extent of the damage and decide on future actions.
Beach Closures and Safety Alerts
Rodanthe Beach is closed from its northern boundary down to the Rodanthe pier. Authorities warn against entering the ocean due to potential water quality issues linked to damaged septic systems in the area.
Debris Cleanup Efforts Underway
Several public beach access boardwalks have been either buried or damaged by the storm’s waves. In addition, numerous private beach access stairs and boardwalk decking, along with parts from septic systems and various debris from residences, are scattered along the shoreline. Seashore staff and volunteers are conducting cleanup operations as part of their routine patrols.
Off-Road Vehicle Access and Campground Status
Meanwhile, both Cape Point and Frisco campgrounds are closed due to the State of Emergency declaration, permitting only those campers who are unable to leave Hatteras Island because of limited transportation options.
