Trout Stocking Schedule Announced
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) has released the trout stocking schedule for the Delayed Harvest program for fall 2026. The Armstrong hatchery is now the main facility producing trout following the closure of the Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery, which is undergoing significant renovations. In light of these renovations, the NCWRC had previously indicated that trout stocking would be limited during this construction period.
According to NCWRC representative Deaton, the plan is to stock all Delayed Harvest streams in November at a minimum rate of 35%. This figure aligns with the initial proposal made when the renovation project at Setzer commenced. To bolster the stocking for this fall, approximately 50,000 catchable-size trout were procured from a private hatchery. This additional supply will also help ensure sufficient trout are available for early spring stockings. The upcoming Delayed Harvest stockings will also feature some larger broodfish, specifically those over 14 inches.
Fishing Regulations for Delayed Harvest Waters
In compliance with Delayed Harvest Trout Waters regulations, catch-and-release fishing for trout is allowed in the program waters from October 1, 2026, until June 5, 2027. During this period, anglers are not permitted to possess natural bait and may only use artificial lures equipped with a single hook. An artificial lure is defined as one that is not treated with any substance intended to attract fish through taste or smell.
Typically, the NCWRC staff stocks trout from fall through spring at high densities to enhance anglers’ chances of success. The Delayed Harvest Trout Waters, marked by distinctive black-and-white diamond-shaped signs, are favored by those who enjoy catch-and-release fishing.
Impact of Hurricane Damage on Stocking
Anglers should take note that the stocking locations along various streams may have been altered due to damage caused by hurricanes, which could affect both stocking efforts and access for fishermen.
Update on Setzer Hatchery Renovation
Regarding the renovation of the Setzer hatchery, Deaton stated that the project is progressing well and remains on schedule. The installation of pipes and underground electrical systems has been completed, and construction on the buildings and raceways is set to commence shortly, with an anticipated completion date in December 2027. Upon completion, the Setzer hatchery will feature improvements aimed at enhancing water quality, reducing temperatures, and optimizing water usage. Additionally, NCWRC is addressing upstream watershed damage through initiatives by its new Helene Restoration Division.
