Funding Announced for S-Line Rail Improvement
Governor Josh Stein and North Carolina Department of Transportation Secretary Daniel Johnson gathered with representatives from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) in Raleigh on October 15, 2026, to unveil a significant funding allocation of $550 million for the S-Line Raleigh to Richmond Innovating Rail Program. This investment aims to enhance rail travel efficiency, cutting travel times between Raleigh and Richmond by over an hour.
Governor Stein emphasized the necessity of improved transportation infrastructure in North Carolina, noting, “Living in the number one state that people from other states are moving to, North Carolinians need good transportation options that get them where they need to be when they need to get there.” He expressed gratitude toward federal partners and the congressional delegation for their support of the project, which is designed to provide residents with better access to essential destinations.
Project Details and Benefits
Transportation Secretary Johnson highlighted the project’s significance in enhancing rail connectivity within North Carolina and the broader Southeast region. He stated, “This project represents an important step forward in improving rail connections across North Carolina and the Southeast, while supporting freight operations and improving safety.”
During the event, FRA Administrator David Fink and other officials observed the ongoing construction at the Durant Road grade separation project. This key infrastructure initiative is nearing completion, with bridge work projected to finish by November 2026 and final restoration expected by July 2028. The new bridge will replace an existing at-grade crossing, thereby enhancing safety for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists, while also alleviating traffic congestion.
Enhancements to Rail Service
The Durant Road project is a crucial component of the S-Line initiative, which establishes a high-performance rail corridor between North Carolina and Virginia. Funded through FRA grants issued from 2020 to 2025, the program is set to provide quicker and more frequent passenger rail services, significantly reducing travel times between North Carolina, Virginia, and the Northeast. It aims to reinforce regional connections and facilitate smoother travel for residents and visitors alike.
NC By Train has experienced notable growth in ridership, catering to hundreds of thousands of passengers each year and linking major cities and popular destinations across North Carolina with dependable rail service.
Additionally, NC By Train maintains a presence on social media platforms such as X, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
