NC State Joins AAAS
North Carolina State University has been accepted as one of nine institutional members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the largest worldwide multidisciplinary association focused on promoting science, engineering, and innovation for the public good.
Membership Benefits for the University Community
As part of the partnership with AAAS, faculty, staff, and students at NC State can take advantage of a complimentary Elemental membership. This membership offers a range of benefits designed to enhance professional development and engagement in the scientific community.
Members can access various tools and training aimed at advancing their careers, as well as resources to help communicate their research and advocate for science. The membership also provides insights into current science-policy news and significant scientific advancements that impact the science and technology sectors.
Additionally, members have the opportunity to connect with a diverse network of scientists and engineers through the AAAS Member Community platform and can join specialized AAAS Sections. They will benefit from reduced registration fees for the AAAS Annual Meeting and other events, along with access to partner benefits.
Moreover, Elemental members can take on leadership roles that foster engagement within their fields and across broader scientific communities. This membership tier also allows individuals to qualify for exclusive honors and contributes toward eligibility for the prestigious AAAS Fellows election, which requires a four-year membership.
Understanding Membership Levels
The Elemental membership serves as an introductory tier within the AAAS membership structure. It is designed to engage individuals committed to advancing science for societal benefit. However, it does not provide access to the content of the journal Science; users can access this through their institution’s subscription. For those interested in accessing print journals or enhancing their support for AAAS, additional membership levels are available for purchase.
Included in the Elemental membership are various resources such as access to the AAAS Member Community platform, the monthly Member Update newsletter, the weekly Policy Alert, and the daily ScienceAdviser. Members will also find numerous leadership and educational opportunities, as well as networking activities to help further their careers and engage with the science community.
Options for Current Members and Alumni
Individuals who are already members of AAAS can still be recognized as affiliated Elemental members through NC State’s collaboration with the organization by completing a specific form. This will ensure their participation is acknowledged and that they receive any associated membership opportunities.
Furthermore, NC State alumni are also eligible for membership. They can join by using a designated link to select the university as their affiliated institution.
For inquiries regarding the membership or any related questions, individuals can reach out to Kyle Miskell, the director of external faculty recognition in the Office for Faculty Excellence, via email.
