Mock Tobacco Auction Scheduled for State Fair
RALEIGH – A mock tobacco auction will take place on Friday, October 23, at 2 p.m. in the Tobacco Pavilion located in Heritage Circle at the North Carolina State Fair. This event will feature former auctioneers and tobacco company buyers who will simulate a typical tobacco auction experience. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler is also expected to attend.
Event Details and Significance
The mock auction is designed to showcase the traditional process that used to mark the end of a season’s hard work for tobacco farmers. During this event, farmers historically brought their bundled tobacco to the market, where it was auctioned off to the highest bidder. The scene would typically include numerous burlap sheets filled with tobacco, with auctioneers calling out bids while buyers signaled their interest in specific lots.
Currently, most tobacco is sold through contracts rather than auctions. Nonetheless, North Carolina remains the leading producer of flue-cured tobacco in the United States. This mock auction provides an engaging opportunity to visually and interactively experience the history and culture of tobacco farming in the region.
Visual Opportunities
Editors are encouraged to note that this event offers numerous opportunities for compelling visual content, including video, audio, and photographs, which can capture the dynamic atmosphere of a live auction.
