New Youth Volunteers Make Impact at VA North Texas
The Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) at the VA North Texas Health Care System recently welcomed a fresh cohort of youth volunteers eager to contribute to their community. This initiative connects young individuals and families with the hospital, creating opportunities for meaningful engagement with Veterans. The CDCE staff plays a crucial role in ensuring that each volunteer feels included, supported, and part of a larger mission.
Engaging Activities in the Community Living Center
This summer’s six-week Youth Volunteer Program placed students in various departments, with many gravitating toward the Community Living Center (CLC). Within this environment, volunteers engaged in a variety of activities, including playing dominoes, conversing with residents, and enjoying board games. Their presence provided companionship to Veterans, who appreciated the interaction and support.
The energy brought by the youth volunteers fostered increased socialization among the Veterans, encouraging them to leave their rooms and connect with others. Simple activities like playing games often led to meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and the formation of new friendships.
Volunteers Reflect on Their Experiences
Youth volunteer Natalie Dannel expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “Volunteering in the Community Living Center gave me the chance to get to know some amazing Veterans.” She noted that hearing their stories and spending time with them was a significant learning experience.
Another volunteer, Cannan Eyassu, highlighted his personal growth during his time at the CLC. He remarked that his experiences enhanced his communication skills and allowed him to build meaningful relationships. Eyassu also emphasized the importance of respect and compassion he learned while working alongside healthcare professionals.
Lasting Lessons through Service
For many participants, the Youth Volunteer Program transcends traditional community service; it becomes a deeply personal journey. Volunteers not only interact with Veterans but also gain insights into their lives, which shapes their understanding of service and kindness. At the conclusion of the program, many students leave with a clearer sense of identity and purpose.
The Importance of Connection
The CDCE’s Youth Volunteer Program consistently demonstrates the profound impact of connection among staff, Veterans, and volunteers. Often, the simplest actions—such as playing a game or sharing a laugh—create lasting memories and strengthen bonds. The spirit of kindness and connection fostered during the summer remains with both the young volunteers and the Veterans long after the program concludes.
The initiative underscores the potential for volunteers to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Veterans, reinforcing the importance of community engagement through programs like the VA’s Student Volunteer Program.
