NCCU Achieves Historic Enrollment Milestone
North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has reached a significant milestone for the 2026-2027 academic year, recording an enrollment of 10,124 students. This achievement, the highest in the university’s history, reflects a 9.1% increase from the previous year when 9,281 students were enrolled. This marks the fourth consecutive year of enrollment growth for NCCU, which leads the University of North Carolina system in percentage growth.
Chancellor Celebrates Community Efforts
Chancellor Karrie G. Dixon expressed pride in the university’s early achievement of its goal to surpass 10,000 students by 2029. She credited the accomplishment to the dedication of faculty, staff, and the increasing number of students choosing NCCU for their educational pursuits. “Reaching 10,000 students three years ahead of our target is an incredible achievement for NCCU,” Dixon noted.
Details of Student Enrollment
The current student body comprises 2,590 first-time undergraduate students and new transfer and second-degree students, reflecting a 13% growth. Graduate enrollment includes 1,971 students, a 3.1% increase from the previous year.
Provost Ontario Wooden attributes the enrollment surge to enhanced student retention, expanded academic offerings, and active recruitment initiatives. He highlighted the university’s location in Durham, North Carolina, near the Research Triangle Park, as a key factor in attracting students.
Increased Applications from Diverse Groups
NCCU has also noted a rise in applications from transfer and graduate students. The university received a 6.7% increase in transfer applications, totaling 1,778, and a 2.9% increase in graduate applications, reaching 2,392. More than 225 students transferred from other North Carolina institutions, with significant numbers coming from North Carolina A&T State University and the University of North Carolina Charlotte.
Wooden emphasized that the growing enrollment figures are supported by improved retention rates and graduation outcomes. The retention rate for first-year students has climbed to 78.5%, up by 3.2% from last year.
Online Learning and Military Enrollment Growth
NCCU has seen a substantial increase in online learners, with 2,252 students enrolled in online programs, marking an 81% rise from the previous year. The university has also experienced a 13.2% increase in military-affiliated students, bringing the total to approximately 941. NCCU has been recognized as one of the best online colleges for active-duty military and veterans, recently earning a high ranking for military financial assistance.
Demographics and Popular Majors
The most popular fields of study at NCCU include business, health professions, biological and biomedical sciences, psychology, and liberal arts and sciences. The vast majority of students, about 8,022, are from North Carolina, while others hail from states including Maryland, South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. Internationally, the top five represented countries are Nigeria, Kenya, Argentina, Spain, and Canada.
Moreover, NCCU has achieved a new record in on-campus residency, with approximately 43.4% of undergraduate students living on campus, significantly higher than the national average of 24.8% for public four-year colleges.
As NCCU continues to build on this success, Chancellor Dixon expressed optimism about the future, stating, “We’re proud of this moment and excited about where this momentum will take us next.”
