RALEIGH, NC — The North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL) has published its first Quarterly Elevator Index for the fiscal year 2026-2027, revealing insights into elevator device permits and the total number of active devices statewide.
Overview of New Permits
In the first quarter of the fiscal year, the state issued a total of 221 new elevator device permits. This marks a decline of 16.6% compared to the 265 permits issued during the same timeframe in the previous fiscal year. Despite this decrease, the total count of active elevator devices across North Carolina remains robust at 32,439.
Growth Indicators
Labor Commissioner Luke Farley commented on the release of the index, stating, “We continue to see new elevator device permits issued each quarter, reflecting ongoing development and investment in communities across North Carolina.” He emphasized that these statistics provide a snapshot of the state’s ongoing growth, highlighting the connection between new infrastructure projects and community enhancement.
Leading Counties for New Permits
The data also identified the top five counties with the highest number of new elevator permits issued during this quarter. Mecklenburg County led with 61 new permits, followed by Wake County with 17, Guilford County with 16, Buncombe County with 12, and Alamance County with 9.
Significance of the Elevator Index
The NCDOL’s Quarterly Elevator Index serves as a valuable resource for tracking both permitting activities and the prevalence of active elevator devices across the state. This information sheds light on trends within North Carolina’s elevator industry, suggesting ongoing development and investment in infrastructure.
