Commissioners Address Economic Initiatives
The Iredell County Board of Commissioners convened on October 20, 2026, to discuss a comprehensive agenda that included various community projects, economic incentives, and updates on law enforcement and educational facilities. Significant topics covered ranged from substantial economic development grants to revisions of personnel regulations.
Project Avatar Approved
One of the highlights of the meeting was a public hearing focused on an economic development grant for “Project Avatar,” an initiative linked to Mooresville-based defense contractor Corvid Technologies. The proposed expansion involves a 400,000-square-foot manufacturing facility with an estimated investment of up to $98 million. This project is expected to create at least 170 high-paying jobs, with the potential to increase that number to 423, while also retaining 394 existing positions. After public commentary regarding wage considerations, the Board unanimously endorsed a grant not exceeding $3,187,100 over a decade, contingent upon performance metrics.
Strategic Planning Session
During a work session with representatives from the Centralina Regional Council, the Board engaged in discussions aimed at revising the County’s five-year strategic plan. The commissioners reiterated their commitment to efficient public service while enhancing the County’s reputation as a desirable place for families. They outlined priorities for strategic goals, including Economic Development, Education, Public Safety, and General Government. The Board emphasized the importance of balanced growth and competitive wages, while also opposing state policies that may disadvantage successful counties. Centralina will collaborate with County staff to advance the next steps of the planning process.
Personnel Ordinance Review
A public hearing was held to review updates to the Iredell County Personnel Ordinance. The proposed amendments include minor clarifications regarding exemptions for elected officials such as the Sheriff and Register of Deeds, guidelines for overtime calculations, and aligning holiday schedules with the State of North Carolina. The Board decided to continue the hearing until the meeting on November 17, allowing staff and department directors additional time to assess the proposed changes.
Additional Business Highlights
In other matters, the commissioners accepted a minimum bid of $2 million for the property at 204 Bluefield Road in Mooresville, initiating a 10-day upset bid process. They also approved Budget Amendment #18, which allocates $399,804 in state funds to provide a one-time bonus of $1,750 for eligible sworn law enforcement personnel, set for distribution on October 30. Furthermore, Budget Amendment #19 was authorized to allocate additional capital funding to local schools, with $1,045,850 designated for Iredell-Statesville Schools and $385,370 for the Mooresville Graded School District.
Upcoming Meetings and Opportunities
The Board approved several capital project ordinance fund transfers, including reallocating $500,000 for Parkertown Elementary School and $1.5 million for Weathers Creek High School into professional architectural services. Additionally, they authorized a Health Department budget amendment for the construction of an OSHA-compliant instrument processing sink and wrote off $7,528.85 in uncollectible patient balances prior to June 30, 2023.
Public hearings will be held on November 17 regarding the extension of a bond for Mitchell Community College’s public safety training facility and potential economic incentives for Project Art. The Board also made updates to their Rules of Procedure to clarify public comment guidelines.
The next regular meeting of the Iredell County Board of Commissioners is set for November 17, 2026, at 6 p.m. at the Iredell County Government Center.
