Annual STEAM Career Showcase Planned for Students with Disabilities
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will host its 13th annual STEAM Career Showcase for Students with Disabilities on Tuesday, October 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This event aims to address the underrepresentation of individuals with disabilities in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) sectors. The museum operates under the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
Event Details and Activities
This no-cost event is tailored for middle and high school students with disabilities, offering them the opportunity to engage with successful role models in STEAM fields. Participants can look forward to a Keynote Presentation, a Panel Discussion, and an Opportunity Fair, which will provide valuable insights and allow them to interact directly with speakers. The showcase is designed to inspire attendees and assist them in exploring potential career paths.
Dr. Louis Vaught, an engineer known for his innovative work in materials and manufacturing technologies, will deliver the keynote address. His notable projects include the development of wearable batteries integrated into clothing, durable plastics capable of withstanding extreme conditions, and reusable adhesives for satellite construction in orbit.
Additional Resources and Support
Participants will also have the chance to learn about various programs offered by the museum, including volunteer opportunities for students. An employment specialist from the Autism Society of North Carolina will be present to guide autistic job seekers in their employment pursuits. Additionally, attendees can gather information about the award-winning Catalyst program at NC State, which equips high school students with disabilities for careers in STEM fields. The NC ABLE Program will also provide insights into financial resources available for individuals with disabilities, including savings and investment options.
Accessibility and Registration Information
To ensure inclusivity, American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and live captions will be available during key portions of the event, including the Welcome, Keynote Presentation, and Panel Discussion. For those unable to attend in person, these segments will be livestreamed on YouTube.
Registration for the showcase is complimentary but required, with a deadline of October 9. Interested participants can find more information and register by visiting the museum’s official website. For further inquiries, Samantha Frigerio, the Coordinator of Accessibility, can be contacted via email or phone.
