NCCU Enhances Transfer Programs
North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has announced the establishment of eight new partnerships with community colleges across the state, aimed at providing more accessible pathways to bachelor’s degrees for students, particularly those in rural areas. This initiative was unveiled on October 14 during the Eagle Connect Signing Ceremony at the Raleigh Convention Center, coinciding with the North Carolina Community College System Conference.
The signing event saw leaders from both NCCU and various community colleges come together to discuss ways to improve transfer opportunities and facilitate the transition from community colleges to the university. Ontario Wooden, Ph.D., the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at NCCU, emphasized the importance of these partnerships. “Eagle Connect strengthens our commitment to expanding educational access by creating seamless transfer pathways that help students transition successfully from North Carolina community colleges to North Carolina Central University,” he remarked.
Participating Community Colleges
The community colleges involved in this new initiative include:
- Alamance Community College
- Brunswick Community College
- Catawba Valley Community College
- Central Carolina Community College
- Nash Community College
- Pitt Community College
- Robeson Community College
- Vance-Granville Community College
These collaborations are particularly significant as they represent the first partnerships of this kind for many of the rural community colleges involved. At the signing ceremony, seven community college presidents joined NCCU Chancellor Karrie G. Dixon in formalizing the agreements.
Benefits for Students
Students participating in the Eagle Connect program will benefit from guaranteed admission to NCCU, a waived $50 application fee, and assistance with class selection and early registration. Additionally, they may be eligible for transfer scholarships, which can help alleviate the financial burden of pursuing a four-year degree.
Before transitioning to NCCU, students will have early access to university resources and campus life, including select athletic events, Lyceum programs, career fairs, and educational workshops. These experiences are designed to help them acclimate to the university environment and enhance their chances of academic success. After transferring, students can utilize the university’s Course of Study Planner to ensure they remain on track to complete their bachelor’s degree.
Building Pathways to Success
Sharon Oliver, Ed.D., associate vice chancellor for enrollment management at NCCU, highlighted the broader implications of the agreements. “Through these memoranda of understanding, we are doing more than signing eight agreements—we are building bridges to opportunity, achievement, and timely degree completion,” she stated. “By aligning resources, sharing expertise, and putting students first, we transform the transfer experience into a seamless, supported pathway to success.”
