Nasa Partners with Virginia Energy for Enhanced Energy Planning
NASA is embarking on a collaborative effort to bolster long-term energy security in Virginia through a new partnership with the Virginia Department of Energy. This initiative, announced during a ceremony on October 20, 2023, at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, aims to utilize NASA’s expertise in atmospheric sciences to aid Virginia in energy generation and planning.
The Space Act Agreement will enable NASA to provide critical datasets related to solar energy, meteorological conditions, and forecasts of future weather risks. These resources are intended to inform energy system modeling and operational decisions, enhancing the state’s ability to prepare for extreme weather events and their implications on electricity demand and generation.
Improving Energy Resilience
According to Allen Kilgore, Deputy Director of NASA Langley, the collaboration represents a significant opportunity to leverage NASA’s unique scientific data to improve the lives of Virginians and enhance energy security in the Commonwealth.
Virginia Energy Director Vince Maiden emphasized the importance of realistic energy models in effective planning. He noted that this partnership will deepen their understanding of how weather influences electricity supply and demand, allowing for better identification of vulnerabilities and more informed resource management.
NASA’s Prediction of Worldwide Energy Resources (POWER) data will play a vital role in this partnership. These datasets will be integrated into Virginia Energy’s analysis systems, supporting the design of energy generation systems and improving the prediction of energy production through validated Earth science data.
Streamlined Data Access for Better Decision-Making
The agreement includes provisions for Virginia Energy to access NASA’s POWER web platform, allowing officials to download specific datasets for their modeling tools directly. NASA’s POWER team will collaborate with Virginia Energy researchers to facilitate data exchange and ensure that the information is in usable formats, while also assessing any additional data needs.
This partnership is a product of NASA Langley’s Strategic Partnerships Office, which aims to connect various sectors, including industry and academia, with NASA’s facilities and expertise to foster innovative solutions in energy and other fields.
