Fayetteville State University Achieves Record Enrollment
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Fayetteville State University (FSU) has set a new milestone with over 7,700 students enrolled for the 2026 academic year, marking the highest enrollment in its history. This achievement coincides with a historic retention rate, surpassing 80% for the first time, now at 80.7%. This progress highlights the institution’s growth trajectory, as FSU has increased its student body by more than 1,000 since 2021 and raised its retention rate from about 63% over the past five years. Last year, the university celebrated the graduation of over 1,200 students.
High Academic Standards for Incoming Students
Chancellor Darrell T. Allison expressed pride not only in the enrollment figures but also in the academic quality of the incoming students, who hold an average GPA of 3.45, the highest recorded at FSU. “Students with higher academic profiles are choosing FSU, and our historic retention rate illustrates that more students are not only choosing FSU but, most importantly, remaining and graduating in four years or less,” he stated. The university’s commitment to serving a diverse student body, particularly from rural and underrepresented communities in North Carolina, underscores the significance of these retention achievements.
Commitment to Military-Affiliated Students
FSU has also made strides in supporting military-affiliated students, with enrollment exceeding 2,500 for the 2026 academic year, another record for the university. Located in close proximity to Fort Bragg, FSU emphasizes its mission to serve active-duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Pamela Baldwin, vice chancellor for strategic enrollment and student success, noted the importance of providing academic programs and services tailored to the unique challenges faced by military students, stating that the university’s role extends beyond enrollment to ensuring student success and graduation.
Academic Programs Driving Enrollment Growth
The surge in enrollment is partly attributed to rising interest in academic programs that align with workforce needs and career opportunities. FSU offers a range of programs in high-demand fields such as nursing, business, cybersecurity, computer science, construction project management, supply chain management, forensic science, and sports and fitness management. Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Scott Krawczyk emphasized the university’s focus on aligning its academic offerings with market demands, noting that students and their families are increasingly aware of the value a college degree can provide for future career prospects.
Ongoing Commitment to Diversity and Affordability
In response to evolving workforce requirements, FSU continues to enhance its academic offerings while prioritizing affordability and quality education. The university also aims to support a significant number of transfer and adult learners by creating flexible pathways for degree completion. Chancellor Allison remarked on the transformative changes at FSU, emphasizing a commitment to honor the university’s legacy while adapting for future challenges. “Record enrollment coupled with record retention levels, stronger students and graduates are how we measure real progress and success,” he stated.
