The Popp Martin Student Union at the University has unveiled a new area designed for relaxation and rejuvenation, named the Niner Nest. This tranquil space, situated in Room 280 of the union, is available for students, faculty, and staff to unwind.
The Niner Nest aims to provide a serene environment, featuring cozy furnishings and checkout lockers equipped with items like noise-canceling headphones, puzzles, and weighted pillows. The room is decorated in soothing colors to enhance the calming atmosphere.
Inspiration Behind the Name
The name “Niner Nest” pays tribute to the university’s original mascot, the Night Owls, as well as the geese that inhabit the campus. The concept draws on the notion of a nest as a safe haven and home base within nature.
According to Morgan Meehan, director of student centers, the intention of the Niner Nest is to create an environment where individuals can relieve stress and take a moment to reset. “The goal of the Niner Nest is that when you enter the space your shoulders drop, your jaw unclenches and you can take some time to reset,” Meehan stated.
Community Input Shapes the Space
The development of the Niner Nest was influenced by student feedback gathered through a survey that assessed desired spaces and services in student centers. A significant 72 percent of respondents expressed interest in a quiet or meditation lounge, prompting the Student Centers Advisory Board to make this a priority.
Key contributors to the establishment of the Niner Nest include Lisa Sain, a project manager with the planning, design, and construction team within Facilities Management, alongside the architectural team from McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture. Input from members of the 2025-26 advisory board was also crucial in shaping the design, ambiance, and guidelines for the space.
Access and Usage Guidelines
The Niner Nest is accessible during the operating hours of the Popp Martin Student Union and is open to all active students, faculty, and staff. Access requires tapping a University ID. The space is specifically designated for relaxation and is not to be used for meetings, social gatherings, phone calls, or napping, ensuring its value as a peaceful retreat for the campus community.
By adhering to the intended purpose of the Niner Nest, Meehan emphasized the importance of maintaining its integrity as a sanctuary for all who use it.
