Investigation Reveals Embezzlement at Burnsville ABC Store
BURNSVILLE, N.C. — A joint investigation by the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement Division (ALE) and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has led to the arrest of Linda Sue McDowell, the manager of the Burnsville ABC Store, on charges of embezzlement. The inquiry, which lasted several months, focused on allegations of financial misconduct at the store, located at 752 W US Hwy 19 E.
The investigation was initiated after ALE received tips suggesting that McDowell had misappropriated funds. In May, they requested an official audit from the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Commission, which subsequently uncovered substantial discrepancies in the store’s finances.
Charges Filed Following Detailed Audit
As the investigation progressed, ALE and SBI agents collaborated with the Yancey County District Attorney’s Office to conduct thorough searches of various assets, including bank accounts, mobile devices, and computer equipment. Their findings revealed that McDowell had embezzled a total of $201,523.47 from the ABC store.
Bryan House, Director of ALE, emphasized the importance of accountability in public institutions, stating, “Embezzlement of public funds undermines the integrity of public institutions and erodes the trust communities place in those responsible for serving them.” He also expressed gratitude for the collaboration with SBI and recognized the hard work of the agents involved in the investigation.
Details of the Arrest and Charges
McDowell, 61, was taken into custody at her home without any issues. She faces serious charges including felony embezzlement and felony larceny by an employee. Following her arrest, she was assigned a secured bond set at $1,000,000.
