Governor Stein Acknowledges Educators’ Contributions
On November 4, 2026, Governor Josh Stein paid tribute to educators in North Carolina and highlighted the efforts of the State Board of Education. During the event, he emphasized the pivotal role that teachers play in fostering student potential.
“Educators are role models who pour into students each and every day to help them meet their potential,” Governor Stein stated. He expressed gratitude for the accomplishments of the state’s educators, recognizing their ongoing impact in shaping future generations.
Record Achievements in Education
North Carolina’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, Maurice “Mo” Green, also commended educators, noting their significant contributions to the state’s educational success. “North Carolina’s educators are making history with our students, and our State Board of Education members have been steady leaders and partners in that work,” he remarked. He pointed out that the state is experiencing its highest graduation rate in history, alongside record results in Advanced Placement exams and career and technical education credentials.
Green acknowledged the dedication of educators and the Board members, expressing appreciation for Governor Stein’s recognition of their service.
Budget Investments in Education
Despite these achievements, North Carolina remains near the bottom nationally in terms of K-12 funding, with spending per pupil falling significantly below the national average. In response, Governor Stein recently signed a budget aimed at addressing this disparity. The budget includes an 8% increase in average teacher salaries, the largest raise in two decades, and a 17% increase in starting teacher salaries, marking the most substantial rise in nearly 50 years.
The new budget also allocates funds for programs designed to enhance student learning and support teacher development. It expands initiatives like the Science of Reading and the Advanced Teaching Roles program, which allows experienced teachers to mentor their peers while remaining in the classroom. Additionally, it introduces the TeachReadyNC program, paving the way for apprenticeship opportunities in teaching careers.
