UNCG Volleyball Star Shines Nationally
Allie Sweet, an exceptional player for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team, is making headlines as she leads the nation in both kills and points. The junior outside hitter ranks among the top five nationally in several categories, including total attacks, attacks per set, kills per set, and points per set.
Sweet’s remarkable performance this season follows her recognition as an All-Southern Conference (SoCon) First Team member last year, where she finished as the conference leader with 501 kills and contributed 34 service aces for her team. Additionally, she earned a spot on the SoCon Academic All-Conference Team.
This fall, Sweet achieved a significant milestone by recording 36 kills in a single match, setting a new program record. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 34 kills set by Becky Moore in 1997.
Spartans Experience Success
The UNCG Volleyball program has benefited from nearly $4 million in support from donor James Dutton, which has contributed to their current success. As of October 19, the Spartans boast a 13-7 overall record and a 6-3 mark in SoCon competition, currently riding a four-match winning streak—their first four consecutive SoCon victories since the 2021 season.
Sweet has been named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week three times this season. Her teammate, Izora Gragg, has also been recognized, earning SoCon Setter of the Week honors twice. Gragg ranks second in the conference for both assists per set and total assists. Additionally, Connore’ Siler-Nixon holds the second spot in the SoCon for blocks per set average and total blocks. As a team, the Spartans are second in the conference for assists per set, hitting percentage, and kills per set.
Sweet’s Journey and Future Aspirations
Originally a basketball player, Sweet found her true passion in volleyball. She appreciates the strong bonds she has formed with her teammates, stating, “My favorite aspect is definitely my teammates and that bond on and off the court.” She also enjoys the thrill of scoring, particularly the satisfaction of “hitting it hard and getting a kill.”
The lively atmosphere during matches is another highlight for Sweet, who notes the energetic presence of students, alumni, and Greensboro residents, alongside enthusiastic parents cheering in the stands.
Alongside her athletic commitments, Sweet is pursuing her education major, attending classes with fellow future teachers, and interning at Oakview Elementary in High Point. As she prepares for her senior year, she plans to student-teach and has hopes of playing volleyball overseas after graduation. Sweet also envisions a future where she can live near her family and work as an educator.
Upcoming matches for UNCG Volleyball include home games against Chattanooga on October 23 and 24, and Samford on November 6 and 7, all of which will be broadcast on ESPN+.
