Major Renovation Underway at UNCG Main Library
Significant changes are in progress at the Main Library of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Construction activity is evident with extensive fencing surrounding heavy machinery next to the Elliott University Center. Workers in hard hats are frequently seen, and the sound of machinery can be heard around Walker Avenue, indicating that the renovation project is actively moving forward. Even the university’s mascot, Rawk, has had to navigate around the construction.
Enhanced Facilities for Future Students
The renovation aims to create a modernized library that will better cater to the needs of current and future students. Construction commenced in 2025 and is anticipated to be completed by 2028. Once finished, the library will offer a variety of new features, including additional seating areas, modern study rooms, updated computer labs, a grand staircase, and scenic views from the windows.
Library Access During Renovation
While certain sections, such as the tower, are currently closed to the public, the library remains accessible for students requiring resources. They can still borrow books, conduct group meetings, or seek assistance at the Academic Achievement Center. Furthermore, the Harold Schiffman Music Library, located within the School of Music, continues to provide a wide selection of books, music, technology, and other materials for checkout.
Community Support Requested
During this busy period, UNCG encourages the community to remain patient and considerate of the ongoing construction efforts. Students and staff are invited to explore the services available in the open spaces and online.
