Commissioners Address Local Initiatives
The Iredell County Board of Commissioners convened on Tuesday, October 6, to discuss a comprehensive agenda that included improvements to educational facilities, land conservation projects, preparations for countywide property reappraisals, and updates on fire service delivery.
Funding for School Enhancements
During the pre-agenda session, the Board examined a proposal from Iredell-Statesville Schools seeking $3 million in lottery funds from the state. The financial support is intended for enhancements at South Iredell High School’s stadium, which will feature a new turf field, an updated track system, improved LED lighting, and safety upgrades to the retaining wall and bleacher access. The commissioners highlighted the importance of collaborating with local school leaders to comply with state and federal requirements while meeting the capital needs of schools. The budget amendment was approved unanimously.
Conservation Efforts in Iredell
A presentation on a joint conservation initiative in the Rocky River corridor was also on the agenda. In partnership with the Davidson Lands Conservancy, the Board discussed applying for a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to acquire 220 acres, including 125.7 acres in Iredell County, to create the Harry and Mildred Hart Nature Preserve. The initiative aims to permanently protect natural habitats, provide public trail access, and potentially establish a nature education center. The Board expressed its support for pursuing grant funding to further this project, unanimously approving the application.
Review of Property Reappraisal Values
County Tax Assessor Andy Alexander introduced the proposed Schedule of Values for the upcoming 2027 property reappraisal. The presentation included updates to base rates, minor revisions to depreciation schedules, and the addition of new building categories like barndominiums and data centers to ensure accurate property valuations. During the public hearing, residents had the chance to express their opinions. The commissioners reminded attendees that state law mandates periodic reappraisals to align property values with market conditions. The Board voted unanimously to adopt the updated schedules of values.
Realignment of Fire Department Districts
The Board revisited discussions from a previous workshop regarding the efficiency and serviceability of the County’s 18 fire departments. They considered extending response areas with Statesville and Mooresville under a proposed “Option A” and re-evaluating the coverage provided by five out-of-county departments. The Board initiated redistricting negotiations based on a four-quadrant framework. The commissioners voted unanimously to direct staff to begin the redistricting process using the parameters set forth in Option A to enhance service delivery.
Additional Approvals and Future Meetings
In other business, the commissioners approved a rezoning request for roughly two acres at the intersection of Bailey Road and Charlotte Highway to facilitate the repurposing of an existing building. They also authorized Budget Amendment #17, allocating $53,925 to power the Sharon School Road VIPER radio communications site, and Budget Amendment #14, along with an Opioid Settlement spending resolution, to create and reclassify positions for K-12 student support services. Additionally, a $193,200 design contract was approved for the expansion and renovation of the Iredell County Elections facility.
The Board updated the records retention schedule for the Register of Deeds and authorized the Library to apply for the American Library Association’s “A Year of STEM” grant program. Proposed changes to the County’s Personnel Ordinance were tabled until October 20. The Board also scheduled public hearings for October 20 regarding Project Avatar economic incentives and November 17 for Project Speed economic incentives.
