NCCU Appoints New Literacy Professor
North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has selected Katherine A. Beauchat, Ed.D., to serve as the Goodnight Distinguished Professor of Early Literacy in its School of Education. Beauchat commenced her duties in fall 2026, bringing over 30 years of extensive experience in both pre-kindergarten to 12th-grade education and higher education aimed at enhancing early literacy practices and educator training throughout North Carolina.
Professional Background and Experience
Prior to her appointment at NCCU, Beauchat was an associate professor at Notre Dame of Maryland University, where she led Advanced Programs, oversaw the Reading Specialist certification program, and played a key role in launching the institution’s inaugural dyslexia certification program. She also held a position as an associate professor at York College of Pennsylvania, where she coordinated the Early Elementary program and fostered community engagement through professional development and literacy initiatives.
Beauchat’s career began in the classroom as a Head Start and kindergarten teacher, later transitioning to roles as a reading specialist and middle school literacy coach. She earned her Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction: Literacy from the University of Delaware and has authored or co-authored four professional publications. Her latest book, titled The Science of Reading in the Preschool Classroom: Practical Tools for Early Childhood Teachers, which she co-wrote with Katrin Blamey and Joanna Newton, was published by Routledge in 2026 and provides actionable strategies for literacy instruction in preschool settings.
Focus on Early Literacy Initiatives
The Goodnight Distinguished Professorship, established in 2023 with contributions from Jim and Ann Goodnight, is part of a collaborative network of early literacy initiatives within the University of North Carolina System designed to enhance educator preparation programs. In her new role, Beauchat will work closely with faculty across various disciplines, including birth-kindergarten, elementary education, and special education. Her efforts will center on promoting evidence-based literacy instruction, developing teacher candidates, facilitating professional learning, and strengthening partnerships with schools and communities.
Jeffrey M. Warren, Ph.D., interim dean and professor in NCCU’s School of Education, remarked on Beauchat’s appointment, stating, “Dr. Beauchat brings the experience, scholarship and leadership to help us deepen strong literacy instruction, strengthen our partnerships with schools and communities, and prepare educators who can make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families across our state.”
