HR Updates for UNC Charlotte Employees
At the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the Human Resources department emphasizes the importance of its faculty and staff, providing essential resources and opportunities to enhance their professional journeys. The latest edition of Niner Insider outlines critical updates concerning open enrollment, employee development, educational benefits, and other initiatives aimed at supporting staff throughout their careers.
Focus on Employee Development
The Employee Success and Development team is dedicated to creating a nurturing and productive work environment. This team connects employees with various resources, recognition programs, and development opportunities necessary for their success at the University. They oversee initiatives related to employee wellness, learning and organizational development, new employee orientations, and performance management.
This team acts as a valuable resource for staff seeking assistance on HR services, workplace support, and professional growth opportunities.
Centralized HR Support System
Launched six months ago, HR Connect has become UNC Charlotte’s centralized online platform for addressing HR inquiries and requests. Unlike traditional email communication, employees are encouraged to use this portal for submitting questions and requests, allowing for efficient tracking and secure communication with HR.
Educational Opportunities for Staff
To foster professional growth, UNC Charlotte provides various educational benefits. Full-time employees may qualify for up to three tuition waivers annually for courses at any institution within the UNC System. Additionally, department-funded financial assistance is available for approved work-related courses, certificates, and degree programs, dependent on funding. A scholarship fund specifically for staff members is also offered.
Open Enrollment Information
The open enrollment period runs until November 6, 2026. Employees are encouraged to review detailed information regarding changes to benefits for the 2027 plan year and to make their selections using the provided platforms.
SHRA to EHRA Conversion Opportunity
This fall, eligible SHRA employees will have the chance to transition to EHRA status as part of the University’s ongoing conversion initiative. Informational packets containing details about eligibility, FAQs, and important deadlines have been distributed to those affected. Employees can choose between converting to EHRA status or remaining in their current SHRA positions.
Increased Minimum Wage for Student Employees
Starting in spring 2027, the minimum wage for student employees at the University will rise from $11 to $11.50 per hour. This adjustment will apply to all student job positions, with Human Resources ensuring that existing assignments are updated accordingly.
End-of-Year Hiring Deadlines
As the holiday season approaches, employees should be aware of important deadlines related to hiring proposals. Proposals recommending external candidates must be submitted to HR by November 20, 2026, while those recommending internal candidates must also meet the same deadline. New hires should begin their roles no later than December 14, 2026. Although proposals can be submitted after these dates, candidates will have start dates of January 1, 2027, or later.
Professional Development Programs
The HR leadership and organizational development team offers various programs and certificates to enhance leadership skills among employees. Opportunities include the Career by Design Program, LEADing What’s Next Certificate, and Rise to LEADership Certificate, all aimed at empowering staff to become effective leaders on campus.
Upcoming Workshops and Health Initiatives
Human Resources also provides in-person workshops that address current workplace challenges. Upcoming sessions include “Being a Good Team Player” on October 29, “From Chaos to Clarity” on November 3, and “Successful Meetings” on November 10.
In partnership with ComPsych and the Office of State Human Resources, HR will also host virtual health and wellness workshops, including “Basics of Estate Planning” on October 28 and “Gut-Friendly Habits for Winter Health” on November 17.
